چکیده

It is common to assume that a Hookean solid is isotropic. For a generally anisotropic elasticity tensor, it is possible to obtain its isotropic counterparts. Such a counterpart is obtained in accordance with a given norm. Herein, we examine the effect of three norms: the Frobenius 36-component norm, the Frobenius 21-component norm and the operator norm on a general Hookean solid. We find that both Frobenius norms result in similar isotropic counterparts, and the operator norm results in a counterpart with a slightly larger discrepancy. The reason for this discrepancy is rooted in the very definition of that norm, which is distinct from the Frobenius norms and which consists of the largest eigenvalue of the elasticity tensor. If we constrain the elasticity tensor to values expected for modelling physical materials, the three norms result in similar isotropic counterparts of a generally anisotropic tensor. To examine this important case and without loss of generality, we illustrate the isotropic counterparts by commencing from a transversely isotropic tensor obtained from a generally anisotropic one. Also, together with the three norms, we consider the L2 slowness-curve fit. Upon this study, we infer that—for modelling physical materials—the isotropic counterparts are quite similar to each other, at least, sufficiently so that—for values obtained from empirical studies, such as seismic measurements—the differences among norms are within the range of expected measurement errors.

An Exact Result for the Macroscopic Response of Particle - Reinforced Neo - Hookean

Making use of an iterated homogenization procedure in finite elasticity, an exact and explicit result is derived for the macroscopic response of Neo-Hookean solids reinforced by a random and isotropic distribution of rigid particles. The key theoretical and practical features of the result are discussed in light of comparisons with recent approximations and full-field simulations. DOI: 10.1115/...

Analysis of Intrinsic Stability Criteria for Isotropic Third-Order Green Elastic and Compressible Neo-Hookean Solids

Internal stability of isotropic nonlinear elastic materials under homogeneous deformation is studied. Results provide new insight into various intrinsic stability measures, first proposed elsewhere, for generic nonlinear elastic solids. Three intrinsic stability criteria involving three different tangent elastic stiffness matrices are considered, corresponding to respective increments in strain...

Cavitation in elastomeric solids: II—Onset-of-cavitation surfaces for Neo-Hookean materials

In Part I of this work we derived a fairly general theory of cavitation in elastomeric solids based on the sudden growth of pre-existing defects. In this article, the theory is used to determine onset-of-cavitation surfaces for Neo-Hookean solids where the defects are isotropically distributed and vacuous. These surfaces correspond to the set of all critical Cauchy stress states at which cavita...

Primal and dual robust counterparts of uncertain linear programs: an application to portfolio selection

This paper proposes a family of robust counterpart for uncertain linear programs (LP) which is obtained for a general definition of the uncertainty region. The relationship between uncertainty sets using norm bod-ies and their corresponding robust counterparts defined by dual norms is presented. Those properties lead us to characterize primal and dual robust counterparts. The researchers show t...

Onset of Cavitation in Compressible, Isotropic, Hyperelastic Solids

In this work, we derive a closed-form criterion for the onset of cavitation in compressible, isotropic, hyperelastic solids subjected to non-symmetric loading conditions. The criterion is based on the solution of a boundary value problem where a hyperelastic solid, which is infinite in extent and contains a single vacuous inhomogeneity, is subjected to uniform displacement boundary conditions. ...
